What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are hollow, tooth-shaped restorations that encase the teeth. They are typically used to repair damaged teeth but may also be used to improve the smile’s appearance.

Dental crowns are generally made of tooth-colored materials, including porcelain, to create a seamless blend with the surrounding natural teeth.

Why Treat Cracked Teeth with Dental Crowns?

Teeth can crack for a number of reasons. Whether caused by an injury, decay, or general wear, dental cracks should be treated as soon as possible to protect dental health.

Once a crack develops in a tooth, it becomes permanent and will not heal. Instead, it will only get worse without treatment since a crack in the enamel or dentin will allow bacteria and food debris to enter the tooth, increasing the risk of tooth decay and root canal infections.

Dental crowns are a great option for treating cracked teeth as they can provide a barrier against bacteria and food debris while also restoring the appearance of cracked teeth.

Treating a Cracked Tooth with a Dental Crown

Treating a cracked tooth with a dental crown usually requires two appointments. During the first appointment, the tooth is cleaned and prepared by removing a thin layer of enamel in order to make room for the dental crown.

Impressions are made of the tooth and sent to a dental lab where the dental crown will be custom-fabricated. A temporary crown is placed while waiting for the custom crown to be made.

Once the crown is ready, a second appointment is necessary to remove the temporary crown and bond the finished crown in place. After the crown is properly fitted and bonded to the cracked tooth, the patient can enjoy a beautifully restored smile.

Caring for Dental Crowns and Preventing Future Cracks

Dental crowns are very durable and will last well over a decade with proper care and maintenance, such as proper brushing and flossing and routine dental exams and cleanings.

With that said, it’s important that steps are taken to prevent future cracks. Some ways to prevent dental cracks include:

  • Wear a mouthguard when playing sports, skateboarding, or participating in activities that present a risk of mouth injuries
  • Avoid eating hard foods, like ice cubes and hard candies
  • Seek treatment for teeth grinding or clenching
  • Undergo regular dental checkups to catch cracks early
