Dental Crowns

Sometimes decay or damage is too severe to be repaired with a dental filling. In these cases, dental crowns can be more effective. At Wyse Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Bloomington, IL, our doctors offer custom-made crowns to meet the unique needs of our patients. If you need a dental crown, schedule a consultation with our dentists today...

What Are Dental Crowns?

Traditional dental crowns are tooth-shaped restorations that cover natural teeth. Crowns can be made from a variety of dental materials, including porcelain, zirconia, and IPS e.max®. At our Bloomington dentistry practice, Drs. David D. Wyse and Jay W. Chrisman use crowns to:

  • Repair large cavities
  • Reinforce weakened teeth
  • Restore chipped, cracked, or fractured teeth
  • Improve the appearance of discolored teeth
  • Cover teeth after root canal therapy

Our dentists also offer dental implant-supported crowns. A dental implant-supported crown is a prosthetic tooth that can be attached to a dental implant to replace a missing natural tooth. We refer patients to the area's best oral surgeons for dental implant placement.

The Dental Crown Timeline

Patients who receive a dental crown at Wyse Family & Cosmetic Dentistry can typically complete their treatment in just two office visits. This process involves:

Initial Consultation

During your first visit, our doctors will visually assess the tooth in question and take x-rays to evaluate the health of the underlying structures. Dr. Wyse or Dr. Chrisman will discuss your personal oral health goals with you in detail and design a customized treatment plan to meet your needs.

Preparation

Before your new dental crown can be fabricated, the tooth must first be prepared. If you have an infected tooth, this will involve root canal therapy. If you just have decay or dental damage, we will carefully remove small amounts of enamel and reshape the tooth to make room for your new restoration.

Impressions

Once the tooth is prepared, we will take digital impressions with our iTero system. This device eliminates the need for messy dental putty and increases patient comfort during this process. The handheld wand takes thousands of images of your teeth, which are then compiled to create an accurate representation of your smile.

Temporary Crown

Once the impressions are taken, our doctor will place a temporary crown over the tooth to protect it until the permanent crown can be made.

Fabrication

The image files obtained during your digital impressions will be sent to our trusted dental lab. We've partnered with this lab for over 40 years, and we trust them to create beautiful, natural-looking restorations that fit perfectly. At the lab, a skilled ceramist will craft your permanent crown from high-quality, biocompatible materials such as porcelain or zirconia.

Permanent Crown

After two to three weeks, your permanent crown will be ready at our Bloomington office. You will return for one more appointment, during which our dentists will remove your temporary crown and attach your final restoration. We will ensure that the crown fits properly and that the porcelain or other material blends seamlessly into your smile before bonding the crown to the tooth with durable dental cement.

Dental Crown Aftercare

To maintain your new dental crown, it is important to practice good oral hygiene. Patients should brush at least twice daily and floss once a day. In addition, you should attend regular exams and cleanings at our office so our doctors can monitor the health of your restored tooth.

Individuals who suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding) should invest in a nightguard to protect their teeth from breakage, erosion, and other forms of damage. With proper care, a porcelain dental crown can last for 10 to 15 years on average, and sometimes even longer.

The Cost of Dental Crowns

At Wyse Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, a single crown usually costs between $1,300 and $1,600. Insurance will typically contribute to the cost of a crown, and we offer financing options that can help you afford any uncovered costs.

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal treatment is often the only way to save an infected tooth. While many patients are anxious about root canal therapy, in reality, it's a quick and comfortable procedure that Drs. Chrisman and Wyse can perform in our own office. Root canal treatment usually concludes with the placement of a dental crown.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are tiny posts, typically made of titanium, that replace natural tooth roots and provide secure support for crowns, bridges, or dentures. Implants are modern dentistry's best solution to tooth loss because they fuse naturally with the jawbone, preventing bone atrophy and keeping restorations in place.

Dental Veneers

If you are interested in a crown for purely cosmetic reasons, a porcelain veneer may be a more conservative option that can work just as well. While crowns completely encapsulate teeth, veneers attach to the visible surfaces of teeth. Veneers can obscure aesthetic imperfections to totally transform your smile.
