Comfortable, Gentle Extractions

If you require an extraction due to an impacted wisdom tooth, an infected tooth that root canal treatment cannot save, or other dental issues, you can count on our Bloomington, IL, practice to make your extraction as comfortable as possible.

Why Are Extractions Necessary?

Decay or Damage

If a tooth is too damaged by trauma or decayed by bacteria to be repaired with a crown or root canal procedure, extraction at our Bloomington, IL, practice may be the best solution.

Overcrowding

Many patients don't have room in their jaw for all their teeth. Some teeth may block others from erupting or put pressure on neighboring teeth, increasing the chance for other health issues.

Severe Infection

If the pulp in a tooth's root canal is infected with bacteria, the decay can spread to the jawbone tissue supporting the tooth. In this case, root canal treatment to remove the pulp may not save the tooth.

Impacted Teeth

When teeth fail to erupt properly and become trapped in the gums or jaw, they can cause pain, infected tissue, swelling, crowding, and decay. Wisdom teeth often become impacted and require surgical removal. Our dentists can safely perform all aspects of wisdom teeth extraction, so you do not need to see an outside endodontist.

What to Expect during Your Procedure

  • Before your extraction procedure, we will take an x-ray of the area to precisely plan the treatment. For wisdom teeth, we may also perform a panoramic x-ray to assess their position in the jaw and their relation to your sinuses and nerves.
  • On the day of your procedure, we will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area. If you are concerned about the extraction or need multiple teeth removed, we can provide sedation to ensure your comfort. Detailed post-extraction instructions will be provided to you.

There are two main types of extractions: simple and surgical.

Simple and Surgical Extractions

Simple

If the affected tooth is visible above the gum line, Dr. Wyse or Dr. Chrisman can perform a simple extraction by grasping the tooth with a pair of forceps and gently rocking it back and forth. This process loosens the tooth from the socket, after which it can be easily removed.

Surgical

Teeth that are impacted or broken below the gum line require a small incision in the gums to access the tooth. Depending on the size and condition of the tooth, your dentist may need to remove it in pieces. Once the tooth is fully extracted, he can place sutures to help the gums heal.
