Implant-Supported Dentures

Dr. David Wyse and Dr. Jay Chrisman offer implant-supported dentures at their Bloomington, IL, practice to help you regain your ability to eat, speak, and smile confidently after tooth loss. These stable restorations are anchored by dental implants, which are small titanium posts surgically inserted into your jawbone. Dental implants are designed to replace missing tooth roots and are unrivaled in providing superior support for dental restorations. At Wyse Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, implant-supported dentures come in both full and partial sets, depending on your unique needs.

What is an Implant-Supported Denture?

An implant-supported denture is an oral appliance designed to replace an entire row of missing teeth in the upper or lower jaw. Compared to traditional dentures, this type of denture is attached to dental implants rather than resting on the gums. The number of implants needed to support your dentures will vary based on the state of your oral health and how many teeth need to be replaced.

Are You a Candidate?

The best candidates for implant-supported dentures are those who are missing multiple teeth in their upper or lower jaw. To qualify for dental implant surgery and an implant-supported denture, you must be in good overall health, be a non-smoker, and have enough healthy jawbone tissue to the support the dental implants. If your jawbone tissue has been compromised, it will not be able to support an implant-supported denture. In this case, you may need to undergo a bone grafting or sinus lift procedure to restore your candidacy for dental implants. These procedures will add an additional two to three months to the treatment timeline.

The Implant-Supported Denture Placement Process

During your initial consultation, Dr. Wyse or Dr. Chrisman will perform a detailed exam using digital x-rays and intraoral imaging to determine if you are healthy enough to undergo this procedure. If you qualify, the first dental implant surgery appointment will be scheduled with a trusted oral surgeon in the area.

This procedure is performed under local anesthesia at an outpatient facility. Once you are comfortable, the surgeon will surgically insert the titanium posts into your jawbone. The number of posts placed will depend on how many teeth need to be replaced and whether those teeth are in your upper or lower dental arch. For upper dentures, the surgeon will insert six to eight implants. For lower dentures, four to five implants are typically needed.

An implant-supported denture is an oral appliance designed to replace an entire row of missing teeth in the upper or lower jaw. Compared to traditional dentures, this type of denture is attached to dental implants rather than resting on the gums.

After approximately four to six months, once you have fully recovered and the posts have fully fused with your jawbone, impressions will be taken of your smile. Dr. Wyse or Dr. Chrisman will use these impressions to create a mold of your teeth and gums for a dental lab to use in fabricating your customized denture. Our advanced technology combined with Dr. Wyse and Dr. Chrisman’s skill and training will ensure your implant-supported device successfully restores the function and aesthetics of your smile.

While your device is being designed, your oral surgeon can perform a simple surgery to attach abutments to the dental implants. These small connectors provide a stable foundation for your denture. Once our partner lab returns your prosthetic device in two weeks, Dr. Wyse or Dr. Chrisman can attach your natural-looking restoration.

Benefits of Implant-Supported Dentures

While traditional dentures achieve many of the same aesthetic effects of implant-supported dentures, traditional dentures are far less stable and will almost certainly slip out of place at some point. Traditional dentures rely on suction and dental adhesive to remain in place, whereas implant-supported dentures attach with a ball-and-socket connector for premium stability. Implant-supported dentures can also:

  • Prevent jawbone deterioration

  • Maintain facial structure

  • Improve your ability to speak
  • Allow you to enjoy your favorite foods
  • Improve your confidence to smile
  • Provide long-lasting results
