Restore Your Smile and Confidence with Dentures
Dr. David D. Wyse and Dr. Jay W. Chrisman provide full and partial dentures at their Bloomington, IL, dental practice. These customized prosthetics restore oral function, and are a cost-effective and non-surgical alternative to dental implants. At Wyse Family & Cosmetic Dentistry Cosmetic & General Dentistry, we consider your facial features in the fabrication process and use precise techniques to design your restoration to ensure a comfortable fit, improved dental function, and a natural appearance.
Are Dentures for Me?
Many patients choose traditional dentures since they are a convenient, non-surgical, and affordable restoration option.
Dentures are designed to replace multiple missing teeth. Generally, if you are missing three or more teeth, you may be a good candidate for dentures. However, if the gap in your smile is smaller, a dental bridge may be your best option. We will evaluate your teeth, gums, and oral health to determine which type of restoration will best suit you.
Many patients choose traditional dentures since they are a convenient, non-surgical, and affordable restoration option. Traditional, removable dentures may be the most appropriate solution if you have suffered jawbone recession, or if you have a health condition that disqualifies you from implant-supported dentures or implant surgery.
Types of Dentures
Traditional dentures are available as either full or partial restorations:
Full Dentures: This option restores your entire dental arch, and can be placed on your upper dental arch, lower dental arch, or both. The fabrication process of a full denture begins with Dr. Wyse or Dr. Chrisman taking impressions of your jaw. Next, skilled lab technicians create a prosthetic that will fit snugly and comfortably in your mouth. The plastic base will blend with the natural color of your gums, and will fit securely over your alveolar ridge, the bony ridge that runs underneath your teeth. In most cases, you will need to use denture adhesive to keep the prosthetic in place.
Partial Dentures: This option replaces part of your dental arch, and is usually recommended if you still have some teeth remaining. Our lab technicians will craft this restoration using impressions of your gums. A partial denture consists of a plastic base and realistic synthetic teeth made from advanced, naturally colored materials. A partial denture features small metal clips, which keep it connected to your surrounding teeth. These clasps will be carefully hidden, and your denture will remain secure in your mouth.
Caring for Your Dentures
It is important that you take proper care of your restoration. Good maintenance habits will extend the lifespan of your dentures. Most importantly, proper dental care reduces your risk for gum disease and decay. Bacteria can easily accumulate underneath a removable denture. The microbes will eventually spread, and pockets of bacteria can form in your gum tissue. Over time, your gums can recede, leading to further tooth loss.
You should rinse and brush the appliance at least once each day with a soft toothbrush and gentle cleaner (to avoid scratching your restoration). You should also brush your gums, tongue, soft palate, and any remaining teeth at least once each day. The prosthetic can be stored in water or a denture solution when you are not wearing it. Also, schedule regular exams so that we can monitor your oral health and check the fit of your denture.
