Types of Dentures

Traditional Full Dentures

Patients missing all of their teeth will require a complete denture to restore the upper or lower dental arch.  A traditional full denture consists of a gum-colored acrylic base and a row of custom-made prosthetic teeth. The base is designed to suction onto the gums and is secured in the mouth with a dental adhesive. Traditional full dentures are removable and need to be taken out and soaked overnight.

Partial Dentures

Patients with some remaining healthy natural teeth can complete their smile with a partial denture. Similar to a full denture, a partial restoration is made up of a plastic base and prosthetic teeth. However, partial dentures also contain carefully hidden small metal clips that attach to your healthy natural teeth. These clips provide additional support and limit the mobility of your prosthetic teeth while you eat and chew.

How Partial Dentures Work

Partial dentures are a simple and cost-effective tooth replacement option for many patients of our Bloomington practice. A partial denture will evenly balance the force of your bite, support your facial structure, and prevent shifting.

Premium Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are the most secure and functional type of tooth restoration for people missing all of their teeth. Unlike traditional dentures, these restorations are anchored to the jawbone by dental implants. Implants are designed to replace the missing roots of a tooth, which not only makes dentures stable, but also prevents bone recession. Since dentures supported by implants stay in your mouth at all times, they feel remarkably life-like. Once they are in place, you can care for them just like natural teeth. We proudly provide this solution to patients throughout Bloomington, Champaign, and beyond.

All-on-4 Dentures

All-on-4® is an innovative implant-based solution that secures a complete denture using just four implants. By placing two anterior dental implants vertically and two posterior implants at angles, All-on-4 maximizes contact with your jaw tissue. This unique design allows many patients to skip bone grafting and other expensive preparatory procedures and get started on dental implant treatment right away.

Denture Care And Maintenance

It is important that you take proper care of your restoration in order to maximize their lifespan. Most importantly, proper dental care reduces your risk of gum disease and other issues. Bacteria can easily accumulate underneath a traditional denture. The microbes will eventually spread, and pockets of bacteria can form in your gum tissue. Over time, your gums can recede, leading to serious oral health issues.

You should rinse and brush the appliance at least once each day with a soft toothbrush and gentle cleaner (to avoid scratching your restoration). You should also brush your gums, tongue, soft palate, and any remaining teeth at least once each day. The prosthetic can be stored in water or a denture solution when you are not wearing it. Also, schedule regular exams so that we can monitor your oral health and check the fit of your denture.

Our Denture Repair Service

We understand that your teeth are an integral part of your daily life. That is why we make it as easy as possible for our patients throughout the Bloomington and Champaign areas to get their dentures repaired. In many cases, we can make the necessary repairs in the office, and return your prosthetic to you the very same day. If you have any questions about repairs and adjustments, send us a message, and our dentists will get back to you shortly.

"Thank You!"

Denture Treatment FAQs

Will dentures hurt my mouth?

It is common for new dentures to feel slightly uncomfortable at first. However, your mouth will adjust to the sensation after a few hours. Over the next few weeks, as your muscles develop around the restoration, denture wear should become more comfortable.

Can I convert an old denture for implants?

In some cases, a traditional full denture can be reworked to accommodate dental implants, saving you money on a new set of dentures. We will need to take a look at your restoration first before determining if it is possible.

What happens if my denture becomes loose?

With traditional full dentures, you can expect some degree of bone recession over time. As this happens, you may notice the prosthetic is fitting a little loose. We can reline the denture and improve the fit, but the base can only be adjusted so far. If the fit continues to worsen, you may need to replace the restoration altogether.

How long will my dentures last?

Full dentures tend to last about five to 10 years with proper care, while partial dentures could last as long as 15 years. If you choose to invest in implant-supported dentures, it's important to understand that the implants themselves are capable of lasting 40 years or longer. You can count on us to provide the patient education necessary to get the most out of your dental work.
