Treatment Options for Misshaped Teeth By Dr. David Wyse on May 17, 2019

Woman with an attractive smileMisshaped teeth are a common cosmetic concern for dental patients. While some people are born with teeth that are misshaped or uneven compared to adjacent teeth, others notice a difference in the shape of the teeth as time goes by. Regular wear and tear, bruxism, dental injuries, or an unbalanced bite could all result in misshaped teeth.

Fortunately, there are many cosmetic dentistry treatments that can enhance the size, shape, and color of the teeth, improving the overall appearance of the smile.

Read on to learn more about the treatment options for misshaped teeth offered at our Bloomington, IL, dental practice, Chrisman & Wyse Cosmetic & General Dentistry.

Cosmetic Dental Bonding

Cosmetic dental bonding is a safe and simple procedure that can address minor dental flaws. During dental bonding treatment, a composite resin material is applied directly to the surface of the tooth to conceal imperfections. In the case of misshaped teeth, the bonding material is molded and shaped to fill out the tooth and give it shape, size, and definition that more closely matches adjacent teeth.

The greatest benefits of cosmetic dental bonding are the speed, ease, and affordability of treatment. While there are many reasons to consider dental bonding at our Bloomington practice, patients should keep in mind that it is typically only suitable for minor cosmetic issues. If a tooth is significantly misshaped, another treatment option will likely be more effective.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers also conceal blemishes to improve the shape and overall appearance of the teeth. The main difference between porcelain veneers and dental bonding is that porcelain veneers involve an indirect bonding technique. This means that porcelain veneers are fabricated in a dental laboratory, and then sent to our practice where they are bonded to the facial surface of the teeth.

Porcelain veneers treatment typically requires two dental appointments, and it is more costly than cosmetic dental bonding. However, veneers can address more substantial cosmetic problems than dental bonding, and within a matter of weeks the custom veneers allow patients to enjoy a more attractive smile.

Dental Crowns

Most misshaped teeth can be improved through cosmetic dental bonding or porcelain veneers treatment, but if the shape of a tooth has been significantly altered, a dental crown may be more effective.

Dental crowns completely surround the base structure of a tooth to strengthen it and protect it, while enhancing its appearance. As with porcelain veneers, dental crowns are applied using an indirect bonding process, which will most likely require two dental appointments scheduled several weeks apart.

Although dental crowns can greatly improve the aesthetics of a tooth, treatment does require substantial alteration to the natural tooth structure. Because of this, dental crowns are generally only recommended for more severe dental problems. If a tooth can be effectively treated with bonding or veneers, a patient is probably better off going with one of those options.
